How to Disable Startup Programs in Windows 11
Why Startup Programs Slow Down Your PC
Every program that starts automatically with Windows consumes boot time and uses RAM from the moment you turn on your PC. Steam, Spotify, Discord, OneDrive, Teams, game launchers, and dozens of hardware utilities add themselves to the startup list without the user explicitly approving it. The result: a PC that takes 45 seconds to be ready when it should take 10.
Method 1: Task Manager
This is the most complete method. Open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc and go to the Startup apps tab. You’ll see a list of all programs that start automatically and their Startup impact (High, Medium, Low, Not measured).
Right-click any program and choose Disable. You can safely disable:
- Steam, Epic Games, Battle.net, GOG Galaxy
- Spotify, Discord, Teams (open them when you need them)
- OneDrive (if you don’t use constant sync)
- Third-party printer and scanner launchers
- Hardware utilities like Corsair iCUE, Razer Synapse (launch when needed)
Method 2: Windows Settings
Go to Settings → Apps → Startup. This is a more visual list with icons and estimated startup impact. The result is the same as Task Manager but with a friendlier interface.
What NOT to Disable
- Realtek HD Audio Manager: manages system audio
- Windows Security notification: Windows Defender notifications
- Graphics card driver: NVIDIA or AMD — do NOT disable GPU processes
- Enterprise VPN certificates and services: if you use them for work
If you don’t know what a program does, search for it on Google before disabling it.
Real Impact on Boot Time
On a mid-range PC with SSD, reducing startup programs from 15 to 5 can cut the time to a fully loaded desktop from 30-40 seconds to 8-12 seconds. With an HDD the improvement is proportionally greater.
Disabling a startup program doesn’t uninstall it or prevent it from working: it simply doesn’t open automatically. You can open it manually whenever you need it.
Does disabling startup programs uninstall them?
No. It only prevents them from opening automatically when you turn on your PC. The program remains installed and works perfectly when you open it manually.
Can I re-enable a startup program I disabled?
Yes, in the same place (Task Manager → Startup apps or Settings → Apps → Startup), select it and choose Enable.
Why do some programs reappear in startup after I disable them?
Updates to some apps (especially Spotify, Teams, OneDrive) can re-enable automatic startup. Check after each major update.
Conclusion
Open Task Manager (Ctrl+Shift+Esc), go to Startup apps, and disable everything you don’t need at boot. It’s the fastest change with the biggest impact on boot performance.
